Sailors have long called North Square home and the Mariners House at 11 North Square is evidence of the ongoing connection of the Square to sailors and the sea.
Before there were global positioning satellites (GPSs) to help us find our way at sea, sailors had the celestial bodies to tell time and locate their whereabouts at sea, often with the help of sextants and other nautical instruments. So what better way to honor this connection than by including a sundial in our “Interactive Marine Instrument” sculpture?!
Here is a paper sundial showing a little after 2:00 today, September 20th, which we’re using to help us make the sundial in the sculpture!
