THE CANYON WORLD – SCIENCE ON A SPHERE

machinegraphics
GRAND CANYON VISITOR CENTER, AZ
2013

Animated sequence showing the geological and human history of Grand Canyon. The sequence is seamlessly projected onto the surface of a six foot sphere suspended from the ceiling. Animated images move around the sphere and create the illusion that the sphere is rotating in space.

The project took several months and involved extensive research into the geology of the region. Innovative animation techniques were developed to create seamless, three dimensional landscapes that wrap around the convex surface while animating geological transformations such as earthquakes, floods, erosion and the formation of Grand Canyon.

Size and Materials:
6-foot diameter spherical projection screen and 9-minute animated sequence.
